The City of Perth Brass Band is the oldest ensemble in our organisation. Our mission includes preserving the band's traditions and heritage while fostering an inclusive and progressive environment that benefits musicians and communities at local, regional, and national levels.
We provide a safe and welcoming space for musicians of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to play alongside like-minded individuals and socialise in an inclusive, judgment-free setting.
We typically organise one performance each quarter, along with regular events such as the ANZAC Day march, the Christmas Lights Trail, and the Christmas Pageant march.
We provide Brass Band members with opportunities to enhance their musical skills by learning from experienced musicians and engaging in challenging performances.
In April 2023, the Brass Band celebrated its milestone 125th anniversary, pulling out all the stops, including:
A parade through the Murray and Hay Street malls with bands from across WA
Performing 'Waltzing Matilda' and 'Death & Glory' as a mass band in Forrest Place
Hosting a special concert at the Perth Town Hall featuring guest soloist Dr. Robert Childs on the euphonium
Harry Piper, along with his parents and brothers, came from the Latrobe Federal Band in Tasmania in 1895 and is credited with forming the original band from a group he established at the Perth Wesley Church. Twice in its long history, the band has served as a Regimental Army Band for Citizens Military Units, in addition to its primary role as a not-for-profit community band. This occurred first in the early 1900s and again shortly before the Second World War.
Under many distinguished and long-serving musical directors, the band achieved success in competitions at numerous predominantly Western Australian contests, but ceased competing after 1991 to focus on concert programs for public performances.
In 2015, the Brass Band decided to resume competing in contests and now participates annually in the WA State Band Championships.
